Sugar Flowers After the Wedding — Can You Keep Them?
Sugar Flowers After the Wedding — Can You Keep Them?
One of the most special details on a wedding cake is often the sugar flowers. Delicate, handcrafted and incredibly time-consuming to create, they’re far more than simple decoration — they’re edible art.
A question I’m often asked by couples is: “Can we keep our sugar flowers after the wedding?”
The answer is yes — absolutely.
Sugar Flowers Are Designed to Last
Unlike fresh flowers, handcrafted sugar flowers can last for years when stored correctly. Because they are made from sugar paste or gum paste and allowed to fully dry, they become firm and delicate, almost like porcelain.
Many couples choose to keep a few of their wedding cake flowers as a keepsake from the day, especially if the design included flowers that matched the bridal bouquet or held sentimental meaning.
How to Preserve Them
Sugar flowers are surprisingly durable, but they do need a little care after the wedding.
To keep them looking their best:
Store them in a dry place at room temperature
Keep them away from direct sunlight to prevent colours fading
Avoid moisture or humidity, as sugar can soften over time
Handle them gently, especially finer petals and wired details
The best option is usually to place them in a display box or keepsake cabinet where they can be admired safely.
A Beautiful Wedding Keepsake
Your wedding cake often disappears by the end of the evening, but sugar flowers can become a lasting reminder of the celebration.
Some couples frame them alongside pressed flowers from their bouquet, while others keep a few favourite blooms displayed at home. They make a lovely detail to revisit long after the wedding day has passed.
Because each flower is individually handcrafted, no two are ever exactly the same. Every petal, texture and colour is created with intention, making them a truly personal part of your cake design.
Edible… But Not Really Meant to Be Eaten
Although sugar flowers are technically edible, they are usually created for decoration rather than eating. Many contain floral wires, tape or supports used during the construction process, so they should always be removed from the cake before serving.
They’re best appreciated as an artistic feature — and hopefully treasured long after the last slice of cake has been enjoyed.
More Than Just Decoration
Sugar flowers bring softness, elegance and artistry to a wedding cake in a way that feels timeless. Whether inspired by your bouquet, the season, or the overall styling of your wedding, they help transform a cake into something deeply personal and visually unforgettable.
And long after the celebrations are over, they can continue telling a little piece of your wedding story.
